General information
The DVD that stands for "Digital Versatile Disc" instead of "Digital Video Disc" looks like a normal CD externally. It has the same diameter (12 cm) and the same thickness (1.2 mm) but it has a much higher data capacity than a normal CD.
To obtain this capacity the density of the data is increased, reducing the distance between the grooves and the dimensions of the pits (the small incisions in the grooves).
With this simple compression of the dimensions of the data grooves it is possible to obtain a capacity on one side that is roughly 7 times greater (4.7 GB instead of 680 Mb).
The DVD label can be printed using the following techniques:
• Silk screen
• Offset/Silkscreen
• Vinyl Effect
• Scented Essence

DVD 5 - Technical Characteristics
A DVD-ROM can contain any type of data and the content can be read by any PC with a DVD reader, whether it is a DVD-ROM or DVD-RAM drive. The type of data on the disk is irrelevant, and a DVD-ROM can also be used for the creation of DVD-Video provided that  the files burnt onto it respect specific conventions (such as for an Audio CD, which is just a CD-ROM with files in a pre-established format).
DVD 5 is the most widely used format at the moment.
Capacity Supported 4.7 GB, or up to 2 hours of video in standard DVD quality.
• DVD Layers 1 (12 cm SS/SL)

DVD 9 - Technical Characteristics
A pre-stamped DVD-9 can store up to 8.5 GB or up to 4 hours of standard DVD quality video. The support has two separate recorded overlapping layers, physically bonded together by a very fine layer of glue. As the information is readable from the same side of the disk, it can be read and copied continuously.
• Capacity Supported 8.5 GB
• DVD Layers 2 (12 cm SS/DL)

DVD 10 - Technical Characteristics
Like the pre-stamped DVD-9, this DVD can store up to 9.4 GB of data (in other words 9.4 billion bytes) or up to 4 hours of standard DVD quality video. The support has two separate recorded overlapping layers, physically bonded together by a very fine layer of glue. As the information is stored on both sides of the disk, it is only fully accessible if the disk is flipped over, in order to carry on the playback on the other side.
• Capacity Supported 4.7 GB per side
• DVD-10 (12 cm, DS/SL)
